Student Wellbeing
Supporting Defence Families
At Alawa Primary School, we proudly support children of Australian Defence Force (ADF) members and their families through the Defence School Mentor (DSM) Program. This program is funded by the Department of Defence through Defence Members and Family Support (DMFS).

The program helps students settle quickly into our school community and ensures families feel welcomed, connected and supported.
The Role of the DSM
The Defence School Mentor is here to:
- Support Defence students and their families to feel part of the school community
- Assist with smooth transitions between schools and different education systems
- Provide guidance, mentoring, and a positive role model for students
- Raise awareness of the unique needs of Defence families

- Develop and deliver programs and activities for Defence students
- Connect families with relevant resources and community networks
Meet Our DSM
Our current DSM is Claire Kiely, who brings personal understanding and empathy for the challenges Defence families may face.
- Days at Alawa: Wednesdays, Thursday and Fridays
- Where you’ll find her: In classrooms, supporting learning and in the playground during break times
- For parents:Claire is available by phone or email to discuss any concerns and provide guidance
She also shares updates, resources and upcoming events for Defence families through the school newsletter and email.

Defence Kids Club
Every Wednesday lunchtime, Defence students are invited to join Defence Kids Club — a safe, fun and supportive space to meet others.
Students are encouraged to bring along a buddy, helping to build friendships and strengthen connections across the school.
For New Families
When enrolling at Alawa, please let us know if you are a Defence family and if your child has any special requirements. This ensures the DSM can be available to support your child’s transition into our school community.
