Teaching and Learning

What is STEM

STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. It is an integrated, hands-on approach to learning that prepares students for the future by developing:

  • Critical and creative thinking

  • Problem-solving skills

  • Collaboration and teamwork

  • Independent innovation

Instead of focusing on teacher-led lessons, STEM encourages students to actively explore problems, test solutions and apply their knowledge in meaningful ways.

What is STEM at Alawa

At Alawa Primary, STEM is about the process, not just the outcome. Students are encouraged to ask why, experiment with ideas and reflect on their learning. This inquiry-based approach helps them:

  • Build analytical and reasoning skills

  • Deepen their understanding of key concepts

  • Engage with multimedia tools and real-world challenges

  • Grow confidence in tackling complex problems

How We Learn STEM

STEM learning happens in a variety of ways:

  • Whole-class projects that bring everyone together to explore a challenge

  • Small-group investigations where students collaborate on solutions

  • STEM Centre rotations, where each Year 3–6 class has a dedicated 4–5 week block to use the centre exclusively. During this time, the classroom teacher leads programming, delivery, and daily management of the centre.

Examples of STEM Challenges

Students explore hands-on, real-world problems such as:

  • Building a wall to keep rabbits out of a city

  • Designing a rain shelter

  • Creating a propeller car

  • Building a catapult

  • Inventing a miniature robot to carry food scraps to the bin

Each activity is designed to spark curiosity, encourage persistence, and inspire students to see themselves as problem-solvers.

Why STEM Matters

STEM education equips children with skills they will need in a rapidly changing world. By engaging with STEM, students learn to:

  • Think critically and creatively

  • Innovate and adapt to new challenges

  • Work collaboratively with others

  • Apply classroom knowledge to real-life contexts

At Alawa, we believe that STEM empowers students to become confident, capable learners ready for the future.
