For Parents

School Uniform

All students are expected to wear the Alawa Primary School uniform every day. If a student is not in uniform, they will be asked to visit the front office to change into a spare uniform for the day.

General Guidelines

  • Students are encouraged to wear their house shirts on Fridays

  • Leggings are not part of the school uniform

  • Jewellery and makeup are not permitted, except small stud or sleeper earrings

  • Shoulder-length hair (and longer) must be tied back. Hair colouring, dyes, beads or extensions are not permitted.

  • Jumpers may be worn in classrooms, but students may be asked to remove them outside in hot weather

Footwear

  • Accepted: Closed-in shoes or Roman sandals

  • Not accepted:  Thongs, massage sandals, Crocs, or bare feet. Students wearing unacceptable footwear may have restricted play areas and could be excluded from some activities for safety reasons.

Hats and Sun Safety

Alawa follows a SunSafe policy to protect students and staff:


  • Bucket hats are mandatory for all outdoor activities (No Hat, No Play)

  • Alawa bucket hats are available for purchase through the school

  • Sunscreen use is encouraged and modelled by staff

  • Sun safe practices are included in the Health curriculum

NT Government Policy

The NT Government’s Compulsory School Uniform Policy requires all students from Transition to Year 9 to wear an authorised school uniform during school hours and at official school activities.

The policy is designed to:


  • Promote health and safety

  • Minimise clothing costs for families

  • Create a positive school image

  • Reduce social pressure to follow fashion trends
