Preschool

Overview

At Alawa Preschool, we provide a caring and nurturing environment where children feel safe, supported and valued. Our program enhances each child’s autonomy, creativity and self-worth, helping them build a strong sense of belonging in our school and wider community.

We recognise the importance of being in the moment — giving children the time, space, and experiences to explore themselves and the world around them. Through play and reflection, children grow into becoming mindful, compassionate and capable members of our community.

Our Preschool has been assessed as meeting all National Quality Standards, reflecting our commitment to high-quality care and education.

Learning Framework

Our program is guided by the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) and the National Quality Standards. Learning experiences are designed to:

Support each child’s individual development

  • Foster creativity, independence and problem-solving

  • Encourage social and emotional growth

  • Nurture a lifelong love of learning

The EYLF includes five key outcomes:

  1. Children have a strong sense of identity

  2. Children are connected with and contribute to their world

  3. Children are confident and involved learners

  4. Children are effective communicators

  5. Children have a strong sense of wellbeing

Play-Based Learning

As students progress into the Primary Years, the focus shifts to higher-Play-Based Learning.

Learning through play is at the heart of our Preschool program. Play is how children make sense of the world, and our learning environments — both indoor and outdoor — are designed to support exploration, curiosity, and discovery.

Children engage in a mix of planned, spontaneous and ongoing activities tailored to their interests and needs. Experiences focus on developing social skills, independence, and oral language, while also building strong foundations in literacy and numeracy through:

  • Meaningful Maths

  • Book Explorer

Sustainability learning through visits to the Alawa School Farm (especially in Terms 2 & 3)

In Semester 2, children also participate in a swimming program coordinated by Royal Life Saving. thinking, collaboration, and independence. Learning is designed to reflect real-life experiences and to foster curiosity, flexibility and problem-solving skills.

Working with Families

We believe in strong partnerships with families. Educators observe, document and share children’s learning journeys through photos, stories and conversations with parents and carers. Families are encouraged to:

  • Contribute insights about their child’s interests and development

  • Spend time in the Preschool

  • Meet with teachers at any time for support and guidance

This collaborative approach ensures each child feels supported at home and school.
