Numeracy

Numeracy at Alawa is guided by our Connected Learning Approach, where mathematical thinking, reasoning and problem-solving are taught in meaningful and connected ways. Our goal is for every child to become a confident and capable mathematician who can apply their knowledge and skills in real-world contexts.

Teaching and Learning

Whole-School Approach

Numeracy is delivered through a whole-school model informed by the Meaningful Maths (M²) framework. This evidence-based model strengthens teacher capability and ensures every student engages in challenging, practical and engaging mathematical learning.

Our Teaching Model

Teaching follows the “I do, We do, You do” model:

I do Teachers explicitly explain and demonstrate new concepts.

We do Students collaborate and problem-solve with guidance.

You do Students practise independently, applying skills to new situations.

This structure supports gradual release of responsibility, ensuring deep understanding and independence.

Our Practice

We focus on:

  • Explicit teaching to introduce concepts clearly
  • Differentiation so all students experience challenge and success
  • Conceptual understanding alongside fluency and reasoning
  • Real-world connections that make mathematics meaningful
  • Mathematical talk and reasoning to build confidence and language

Teachers design learning experiences that connect mathematics to everyday life, encourage mathematical talk and reasoning, and build confidence through guided and independent learning.

Assessment for learning is used consistently to monitor progress and inform next steps, while carefully chosen tools, manipulatives and digital resources support deep understanding. By drawing on strong teacher knowledge and evidence-based practice, every learner at Alawa is supported to achieve their personal best in mathematics.
