Literacy
At Alawa Primary School, literacy is guided by our Connected Literacy Approach, where reading, writing, speaking and listening are taught in meaningful, connected ways. Our goal is for every child to become a confident, capable reader, writer and communicator, grounded in the Science of Reading.

Evidence-Based Practice
In 2025, we strengthened our approach with a clear, evidence- based instructional spine that aligns with how children learn to read and write. Teachers provide explicit instruction in phonics, vocabulary, comprehension, fluency and writing, all connected through rich, shared texts that inspire thinking and creativity.

Our Teaching Model
Teaching follows the
“I do, We do, You do” model:
I do
– Teachers model and explain new learning.
We do – Students practise through shared and supported activities.
You do – Students demonstrate independence and mastery.
This ensures all students are scaffolded towards success while maintaining high expectations and opportunities for differentiation.
Daily Literacy Lessons
Every day, students experience a consistent structure that includes:
Review and consolidation
Explicit phonics or spelling instruction
Shared and independent reading
Shared and independent reading
Modelled and independent writing
Opportunities to practise fluency, comprehension and vocabulary
This approach ensures every student receives systematic, high-quality instruction and time to apply their learning in authentic, connected ways.

Our Commitment
Our Connected Literacy Approach reflects both the Science of Reading and the Alawa Way, helping students grow as thoughtful, capable and joyful readers and writers.
